Tips for New Zealand Biosecurity

Before visiting New Zealand it is important to be proactive in order to decrease the spread of invasive freshwater pest species into the country. Anyone who enters New Zealand will need to pass a Biosecurity check.

A few tips for travel, and the easiest way to stop invasive species and make a smooth entry through customs and biosecurity are:

1) Be informed and understand the basics for the biosecurity programme before you arrive

2) Make sure that fishing equipment has been cleaned thoroughly prior to packing it

3) Think about leaving your waders and boots at home- use those which guides may provide and reduce the hassle of running through biosecurity in the first place!

4) If you do pack boots and waders, place them at the top of your duffle with the boots upside down. When biosecurity opens the bag this allows them to see how clean your equipment is and they won’t need to rifle through all of your stuff to get to your equipment

Here are links with downloadable resources on “Check Clean Dry” and how to properly participate before arriving in New Zealand. They also include other Biosecurity resources they also might helpful to know as well.
