Owen River Lodge Walks the Walk When It Comes to Sustainability

We applaud those who are committed to providing a clean environment and their concerted efforts to keep it that way. The future of great fishing depends on it! This is why we recently were so happy to read that Owen River Lodge was recently recognized as the first carbon-positive luxury fishing lodge in the world.

As Felix write in his latest update for the lodge "we’ve always walked the talk when it comes to sustainability. But it goes deeper than that. Trashing the planet makes no sense to us; never has. Plus there are no trout on Mars, so we’ve concluded that staying here and looking after the place as best we can is our only option!"

What does it mean to be carbon-positive?

Essentially one must measure their carbon footprint and then not only offset it, but go beyond via carbon credits. In Owen River Lodge's case, it made the lodge eligible for a Climate Positive Business Operations certification as awarded by carbon trading social enterprise, Ekos.

How did Owen River Lodge do this?

A focus for the lodge was on locally-sourced certified carbon credits. It supported the Kānuka Uruwhenua Native Regeneration Project in Golden Bay, a project which "covers 76.4 hectares of naturally-regenerating indigenous forest that sequesters 896 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually."

Way to go Owen River Lodge!
