The Coromandel & Bay of Plenty

Originally named by Captain Cook for the "plenty" afforded by the coast, not necessarily that from the water itself, this large bay provides opportunity for some of the best game fishing in the country. Boats will be chartered from Taurango or Whakatane while surf-casting on the white sand beaches is also a popular activity for locals. This area also includes the opportunity to experience such things as hot springs on the beach, day trips to isolated beaches and archways carved from the sea, active volcanic islands off the coast and miles of beautiful beach.

Rotorua and Central North Island

Always the focus of excellent fly fishing, this area also provides plenty of other activities which may appeal to those who are not avid anglers or simply wishing to explore the scenic beauty of the North Island. Hot Spas, thermal walks, cultural center opportunities, day trips to underground glow worm caves, world class golf and great walks are all easily accessible. An option for slightly larger groups or families is a private sailboat charter for an afternoon. This affords guests the opportunity to explore native bush and the serenity of hot pools which line the lake front in a more private setting.

As New Zealand's most-visited natural attraction Huka Falls lies just upstream of where the mighty Waikato River narrows from 100 meters across to just 15 meters wide. This forms a series of waterfalls starting at 8m high and culminating in a final 11m high waterfall. More than 52,000 gallons of water pour over this every second, hitting a pool of blue below with a roar.

Wellington and Lower North Island

Wellington is a great walking city and offers plenty of shopping and interesting restaurant options. In addition to day tours in and around the city and waterfront the city also provides the chance to visit ecosanctuaries.

New Zealand as a country is extraordinarily committed to restoring native forests and freshwater ecosystems. Throughout the country conservation projects have reintroduced species and there exist excellent learning opportunities around these efforts. Other options include day trips up the coast and to Kapiti island for guided walks.
