Thoughts on What Time of Year to Fish New Zealand

A question that we are often asked when helping to plan an itinerary to New Zealand for anglers is with regard to the best time to visit. New clients will often note that New Zealand has been on their "bucket list" and this is the "trip of a lifetime." Understandably, they want to make sure that they visit at the best time.

  • Our first piece of advice is to consider the fact that at any time the weather is unpredictable and never guaranteed. Some seasons are simply more cooperative than others. This is why some return annually, because on the average fishing in New Zealand delivers a truly memorable experience!

We hope, when planning an itinerary, that we are providing more than just a great opportunity to catch fish. The people, wines, scenery, adventure, varied ecosystems, wildlife, comfortable accommodations, food, etc. all help differentiate a good time from a great time in New Zealand.

With that said, here are a few thoughts to help in your decision to fish New Zealand:

Summer (Jan/Feb)

It's summer! When timed right, windless days and heat bring cicada and great terrestrial insect hatches. Working a river sans waders, with the knowledge that it's freezing in North America, is rarely lost on an angler. However, it's summer! You aren't the only person to think about getting away to New Zealand and with that can bring higher pressure on the water and the fact that again... the weather is never guaranteed.

  • Our advice: If you plan to visit New Zealand mid-December through February the best thing to do is to plan your trip at least 9-10 months in advance. In addition to getting preferred guides, locking in the best accommodations and smoothest movement through the country, it allows you to grab the best prices for flights in your given class of service.
  • What is the repercussion? New Zealand does not have the infrastructure of the United States. If you wait to plan your trip, lodges will be filled and flights will be full. The best guides will be taken and you will not have the choice to fish the beats that you are traveling there for in the first place.

"Shoulder Seasons" Spring & Fall (November/ December & March/ April)

Traditionally in the spring and fall the country will see less international visitors and thus less pressure on the water. While weather in these times has historically been thought of as a little more unstable, we have observed differently over the past number of years. Whether this is due to recent weather patterns, or simply hearsay observations, there are fantastic fishing opportunities well into April. And while weather is never guaranteed, rain drops water temperatures to more trout-friendly levels. Higher water levels also help flush algae which can form through summer heat waves.

  • Our advice: Whenever you are planning a trip you are taking a chance on the weather. However, the "secret" is essentially out about fishing New Zealand in March and into April. Planning for this time should be done asap, at least 6 months in advance. However, November and into mid-December still seem to be off the radar somewhat for anglers visiting New Zealand. Why not take advantage of this time? Back-to-school events, Thanksgiving and family activities/ parties leading into the holiday season prevent many from traveling to New Zealand in Nov/ Dec. This is the Spring, and we have found the fish to be aggressive + have not been presented to in months.
