A question that we are often asked when helping to plan an itinerary to New Zealand for anglers is with regard to the best time to visit. New clients will often note that New Zealand has been on their "bucket list" and this is the "trip of a lifetime." Understandably, they want to make sure that they visit at the best time.
We hope, when planning an itinerary, that we are providing more than just a great opportunity to catch fish. The people, wines, scenery, adventure, varied ecosystems, wildlife, comfortable accommodations, food, etc. all help differentiate a good time from a great time in New Zealand.
With that said, here are a few thoughts to help in your decision to fish New Zealand:
Summer (Jan/Feb)
It's summer! When timed right, windless days and heat bring cicada and great terrestrial insect hatches. Working a river sans waders, with the knowledge that it's freezing in North America, is rarely lost on an angler. However, it's summer! You aren't the only person to think about getting away to New Zealand and with that can bring higher pressure on the water and the fact that again... the weather is never guaranteed.
"Shoulder Seasons" Spring & Fall (November/ December & March/ April)
Traditionally in the spring and fall the country will see less international visitors and thus less pressure on the water. While weather in these times has historically been thought of as a little more unstable, we have observed differently over the past number of years. Whether this is due to recent weather patterns, or simply hearsay observations, there are fantastic fishing opportunities well into April. And while weather is never guaranteed, rain drops water temperatures to more trout-friendly levels. Higher water levels also help flush algae which can form through summer heat waves.
