Frequent Question: When is the best time to fish for Brown Trout in New Zealand?

New Zealand is famous for its trout fishing, and most certainly for its Browns! As one of the best places in the world to sight cast to these elusive fish, we thought it helpful to share our thoughts on why anglers should consider a visit outside the height of the Summer months. And while we don't mean to scare off those who can only fish during that time (some things can't be avoided) we do want to let anglers know that the traditional "Shoulder Seasons" are excellent.

The Summer Season is recommend specifically for those interested to cast dry flies- when the cicada is the popular fly pattern. Please know however that Americans look to escape the cold of the winter months of North America and travel from Christmas through February. This not a problem in itself, but when combined with Aussies & Kiwis also going on holiday and school vacations... there is increased pressure on the rivers during this time. The warmer weather also can bring warmer water and more sluggish fish- especially if there has not been rain in a given area.

Advice: Plan early if looking to visit during the height of the Summer. This means flights and accommodations locked in 6 months prior to visiting New Zealand. You will thank yourself later for the smooth itinerary!

The Shoulder Seasons are when we find great fishing can be had. Why?

  • Spring fishing happens from roughly early October to mid-December. In the early season, fish are actively feeding after winter. Most of the rivers have been closed to fishing and there has been no pressure on the fish.
  • Autumn fishing takes place from late March and into April. The late season brings large Browns leaving the lakes to spawn in the rivers. They have had the summer to pack on weight, and thus can be large!

Net: What we try to provide clients is the best experience possible and highest return on their dollar. This often means avoiding places of high traffic from International tourists and zigging while everyone else is zagging! In addition, with the chance that next season will be a "year of the mouse" there is the possibility of big fooball shaped fish!
