Nokomai Valley Lodge is a special rural retreat nestled in the home valley of Nokomai Station, a high country farming property approximately one hour south of Queenstown in the hills of Northern Southland. For over 150 years this family-run station has not only maintained itself as an active working farm but has prospered- allowing guests to immerse themselves in a bit of authentic station life.

With no street lights, just vivid night skies, guests are afforded a step sideways from the daily rush to explore a winding country road leading to the hidden valley. Secluded but not remote, a stay at Nokomai is a unique experience. Anglers receive the opportunity to fish 20kms along the Mataura, which winds its way through the property, in addition to fishing other local rivers (the Mararoa, Whitestone, Nevis,Waikaia ,Oreti and Aparima). Those who do not fish also gain an opportunity to experience a wide range of activities in a beautiful South Island setting.

The notorious "Mad Mataura" mayfly hatch can send fish into a feeding frenzy. This is simply a great place to sight-cast on a river this is renown for not only the number of trout it contains, but for its crystal clear water. Additionally, for those who may require more assistance accessing water, many of the river banks in the area are also easy to access as they are on level terrain.

Activities on property allow guests to truly enjoy the beauty of the South Island outside the hectic bustle of larger cities and towns. Hiking trails range from the quick to full-day treks across the property and mountain bikes are also available. As an active farm Nokomai offers guided tours of the property which are an educational and informative experience. A stay here is a look into a small piece of true authentic Kiwi life.

This is also a great place to base explorations off the property and into the nearby amazing areas of Milford and Doubtful Sound. While anglers fish, family members may hike and sight-see the South Island and then al meet back at the end of the day to share stories over a shared meal.

Accommodations are comfortable country-style cottages arranged alongside the main lodge and a historic stone homestead of the original settlers. The cottages are well set up for the outdoor enthusiasts, with plenty of space for gear and private laundry facilities.

Four separate farm cottages are available in one and two bedroom configurations for small groups and families. All rooms will have "super king" beds (which can split into two single beds) or king beds, small kitchenette area with the expected tea/coffee setup, bathroom and living area.

The cottages sit across the path from a beautiful, newly built, main lodge area (completed 2017) which is perfect for relaxing and enjoying drinks after coming off of the water in the afternoon. Large windows in the sitting area allow open views of the property as the sun sets on the hillside golds and yellows of the grass.

A quaint and historic small stone homestead, which harks back to the late 19th century, remains next to the new main lodge. This building was restored in 2000 and remains one of the more cozy places in the country to have a fine meal with the other guests. The large table, stone walls and low ceilings really make one feel as if they are stepping back in time.
