New Zealand Fly Fishing Itineraries and Travel

Why New Zealand Is Perfect for Outdoor Travel (Beyond Fly Fishing)

Beyond Just Fishing

“Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you, if you’re young at heart.”
This lyric from Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen says a lot about New Zealand. Whether you’re after new challenges or a change of pace, New Zealand offers outdoor experiences that feel almost unreal, but they’re very real and very accessible.

If you’re already planning a fly fishing trip, here’s what else you can add to your itinerary, and why so many people return for more than just the rivers.

A Country Built for Outdoor Travel

New Zealand is often called a “fairyland” by travel writers. Horace Sutton once wrote that the South Island “is a fairyland of scenery as if all the world’s national parks were crammed into one place.”

With wide-open spaces and a slower pace of life, it’s a refreshing change from busier destinations. Safety is also a major plus. Apart from rare incidents, New Zealand has a low level of crime and no recent history of terrorism. Like any travel destination, being aware of your surroundings goes a long way to ensuring a smooth trip.

Locals are generally welcoming, and the relaxed vibe makes it easy to settle in, even on short visits.

Summer or Winter, You’ve Got Options

Depending on the season, you can build an itinerary that suits your style. Here are some ideas:

  • Fly Fishing: New Zealand has world-class rivers, lakes, and backcountry streams. If you’re coming for fishing, you already know the drill—but it’s good to know many rivers are close to other outdoor spots.
  • Skiing: In winter, choose from 14 ski fields. In spring (October–November), you might still find snow—especially if you go by helicopter to higher slopes or glaciers.
  • Hiking: Try the Milford, Routeburn, Greenstone, Queen Charlotte or Heaphy tracks. These multi-day hikes have huts along the way and are either guided or self-guided.
  • Jet Boating & Rafting: River rides vary from short thrill trips to multi-day whitewater adventures. Safety standards are high, and all gear is provided.
  • Boating & Diving: Rent yachts or motorboats in the Bay of Islands or Marlborough Sounds. Diving is popular at places like the Poor Knights Islands and White Island.
  • Farm Stays & Horse Treks: Stay on a working farm, ride trails on horseback, or go off-road in a 4WD safari to see parts of the country many visitors miss.

Outdoor Variety Keeps It Interesting

New Zealand isn’t just about high-energy activities. You can also spend time in more relaxed settings:

  • Big Game Hunting: You’ll find red deer, sika deer, tahr, wild pigs, and more. Autumn is the best time for trophies. Local guides are available, and the terrain can be tough, so a good fitness level helps.
  • Gardens: In spring, rhododendron gardens in Dunedin and Taranaki are worth visiting. Many gardens are open to the public and feature a mix of native and imported plants.
  • Golf: The country has one of the highest numbers of golf courses per capita. You can play on world-class courses or small rural clubs. Gear is easy to rent, and green fees are affordable.
  • Jogging & Walking: City parks, quiet roads, beaches, and mountain tracks offer plenty of space to move. Whether you’re walking or running, you’ll find great places to get out and stretch.

Don’t Try to Do It All

New Zealand has a lot to offer, but trying to fit everything in can backfire. It’s better to plan a few key activities and leave room for surprises. Some of the best moments happen when you’re not rushing.

If you’re coming for fly fishing, think about adding one or two side trips based on the region you’re in. You’ll be surprised how much you can see without going far.

New Zealand works for travellers who want more than just one kind of holiday. You can fish for wild trout, hike a mountain trail, visit a garden, or just take a drive and see where the day leads. If you’re planning a fly fishing trip, think about what else you want to explore while you’re here.
