Since 1997 the USA, Australia, Canada and New Zealand have granted parking concessions to nationals with
disabilities, belonging to the ECMT- European Conf. of Ministers of Transport, as they would to their own citizens.
These concessions
usually allowed special parking in areas reserved for people with
disabilities, or allowed longer parking periods or exemptions from
charges.
Disabled motorists between the USA and New Zealand are entitled to the same parking concessions as nationals
in all ECMT and associated countries. The only condition is the display of a badge
showing the international wheelchair symbol. The badges have been standardized
to facilitate recognition and to avoid difficulties at the local level.
However each country has its own rules regarding length of parking, etc. New Zealand has a
Parking Permit scheme administered by CCS Disability Action and although you are granted the same concessions, you may not be able to use your permit from another country (USA).
Your Parking Permit can not be used in New Zealand but you can obtain a short-term permit on arrival for here.
As always, we suggest familiarizing with local laws prior to your trip.
