Flash Floods Rise and Disappear Quickly on the South Island

Recently the South Island has received intense rain (south of the Queenstown area).

Footage of road washouts and observations by many of the worst flooding they have ever seen were very scary to follow.

As of today however, about a week after the floods, we are amazed at how quickly the rivers have dropped and cleared. Reports are that they are fishing again quite well now.

From a guide in the Southland:

To give you some idea, I live beside the Oreti River just out of Lumsden which normally runs about 20-30 cumecs (cubic metres per second), at it’s peak it was 837 cumecs, a scary sight, but fortunately neither myself or any of the other guides were impacted by the floods.

The townships of Gore, Mataura, Edendale & Wyndham were all partially evacuated by the Mataura River. Those fishing in the area were taken to more northernly and dryer spots, where good fishing was found... so not all lost.

So that's it folks- an update on the South Island while the North Island continues to experience record dry heat!
