Tying 'Bruce's Deer Hair Fly'

Materials
- HOOK: Any good quality hook, the size being relevant to the size of the insect imitated. I prefer hooks with 2X to 3X long shanks. Hooks made of light gauge wire will be lighter and allow the fly to float better.
- THREAD: Monocord, Uni-thred or Kevlar in green.
- WING: Fine deer hair or elk hair
Bind hook shank from eye to bend, tie in pinch of deer hair with butts forward and bring tying thread along several millimetres (depending on size of hook) & back again. |
Bend deer hair back over top towards tail, bind down bring thread back over top of it. |
|
Tie in a second pinch of deer hair as before and keep repeating the process until you have arrived close to the eye. Leave last butts protruding a few millimetres, trim and whip finish beyond (between hair and eye).
|
Clip deer heair into sedge-like shape. |
|
The finished Fly |
By using different sizes of hooks and a variety of sculpted shapes, this versatile fly can be made to represent anything from small caddis to large sedges, grasshoppers or cicadas. Being made entirely of deer hair it's extremely bouyant - regardless of size! |
