The Rangitikei is one of New Zealand's premier waters, offering top-quality wilderness fishing for trophy sized fish in its headwaters. It also has a number of very important tributaries which are major fisheries is in their own right. Both rainbow and brown trout throughout the river system with fish in the upper reaches reaching trophy size (i.e. over 4.5 kg) with the average through the rest of the system being around 1.5 to 3 kg. Fish numbers are good throughout the system though there are fewer fish per kilometre in the upper reaches. This is made up for by the quality and size of the fish being larger in this section.

Tarata Fishaway is nestled in bush in the remote Mokai valley where the picturesque Rangitikei River meets the rugged Ruahine Ranges. Tarata's private River Retreat and Tree House have million dollar views of the Rangitikei River and there is trout fishing right at your doorstep.
